Chapter History

On January 7, 1955, the late Mrs. Voradel Carey invited a group of San Diego mothers to join her for a meeting where they would learn about Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated. Mrs. Carey, a modest, well-respected community leader, strongly believed that San Diego mothers could benefit greatly from membership in the organization in which she had learned about through friends.

Soon after the introductory meeting, Mrs. Carey held a tea at the home of Mrs. Quincella Kimbrough, where the guest of honor was Dr. Geraldine Woods, President of the Los Angeles Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Through Dr. Woods, the mothers learned all about Jack and Jill of America, Inc’s focus on promoting the spiritual, social, physical and cultural welfare of children. The inspiring overview convinced the San Diego mothers to proceed with forming a provisional San Diego Chapter.

Today, the San Diego Chapter includes 31 active mother members and a wonderful group of Associate Chapter members. Combined with our children and many fathers, the Chapterrepresents nearly 100 current and future leaders whose primary residence in San Diego County is south of Highway 52.
